Creole Red Onion (spicy). From downtown Austin farmer’s market to our Sunday plate (prolly toppin grilled burgers of some sort.)
I’m so glad I got my butt down to the market this morning. I always learn something new and I always find a food item I never new existed, like Creole Red Onions from Johnson’s Backyard Garden. (They say they are ‘spicy.’)
I bought two lil ‘CROs’ and a small head of purple cabbage and these ‘lil bitty golden beets: all for $2.50. (Eating well and healthy is sooooo inexpensive.)
You might gasp at this one, but I did spend $5 on six nicely sized slicer tomatoes. Which I have big plans for this week. Possibly in some sort of tofu-caprese type summer salad with fresh garden basil.
To give you an idea of the size of these ‘lil golden beets…I can fit three in my hand.
Speaking of fresh garden basil. The new thing I learned (which, by the way, people have probably told me before) was that you can really extend the life of your basil in the fridge, by like double.
I overheard a conversation at the JBG stand. Just take your basil bunch and put it in one of those plastic produce bags and fill the bottom with a little water. Then close up the bag and store in fridge. Voila! I think she said you could have it for over a week.
(If you have a better idea, please let me know and we can share the info.)
BTW…did I tell you I love JBG for the way they provide lil bitty purple cabbage. Cause here’s the deal….when I buy those big ones at the store and I only use half and have to put the other half in the compost…well… I feel guilty…I can’t eat all that cabbage.
(Ok, well, off to work on this week’s menu. Crock pot is doing some work for me this morning… on some beans and diced tomatoes and spices. Maybe I should work up some sort of cornbread in the iron skillet…hmmmm……..)
Have a super Saturday morning. Enjoy!!
